Thousands watch United Synagogue live stream of Megillah for Purim

Megillat Esther was read at Mill Hill East shul and has been viewed almost 4,000 times on Facebook

Thousands watched the United Synagogue (US)’s first live streaming of the Megillah.

The landmark move was made for those unable to attend due to “legitimate Coronavirus considerations”, after the number of confirmed cases in the UK reached 320 on Monday.

The video, which has so far been viewed 3,800 times, showed Yehuda Gaffin at Mill Hill East, the United Synagogue’s newest community, reading the meghilah on Monday night.

This comes after the US sent a letter to chairs of its 62 congregations saying those “unable to attend” a Megillah reading should to stay at home and “listen to the reading, both tonight and tomorrow on a telephone or through a live stream.”

It added that “this facility should only be used by people who meet these criteria.”

This comes after the it issued unprecedented ban on kissing Torahs and mezuzot last week. It stressed that this remains in place.
