A Jewish Labour MP has lodged an Early Day Motion condemning the killing of Palestinian healthcare workers by Israeli forces.

Alex Sobel, the MP for Leeds North West, sponsored the motion after Gaza paramedic Mohammed al-Jedaili became the fifth Palestinian health worker to be killed by the IDF in the past 15 months.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 750 health workers in Gaza have been injured since 30 March 2018.

The motion, which was supported by Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru MPs, asks the Government to “take diplomatic steps to ensure that medical workers in Gaza can perform their humanitarian functions without risk of attack”.

It also urges an investigation “which complies with international standards of independence, impartiality, promptness, thoroughness, and transparency into those deaths”.

Sobel, whose parents migrated to the UK from Israel in 1971, is one of two Jewish Labour MPs in Leeds, the other being Fabian Hamilton, the representative for Leeds North East.
