An 81-year old German right-wing extremist who fled to Hungary to avoid serving the rest of his prison sentence for Holocaust denial has been ordered back by Budapest authorities. Horst Mahler, who was also jailed for inciting anti-Semitism, was arrested last month while trying to cross into Austria.
The foundations of a synagogue destroyed during Kristallnacht in the west of Poland have been unearthed by archaeologists. New Synagogue in Wroclaw, which had four towers and huge dome, was razed during the Nazis’ most infamous pogrom – the Night of the Broken Glass – in November 1938.
The mayor of Mexico City has praised his country’s Sephardi heritage during the opening of the global biennial being held outside Europe for the first time. The Erensya summit, led by a Madrid-based group, saw Sephardi Jews from 20 countries discuss links between Spain and the Sephardic Diaspora.
Lone Chabad rabbis from 23 countries around the world have met in the Spanish city of Girona to discuss ‘small and isolated Jewish communities’. Rabbi Eli Rosenfeld, who works in Portugal, said: ‘Most of us are alone – not lonely, but alone – at our posts and face similar challenges.’
