Country: Egypt

A spy boss urged Egyptian talk-show hosts not to discuss Donald Trump’s announcement that the U.S. was recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, for fear of riots. Since the story broke, Egyptian authorities have criticised the New York Times from reporting the activities of Capt. Ashraf al-Kholi.

Conservative lawmakers in the Bundestag are proposing new laws allowing the expulsion of migrants who espouse anti-Semitism. Politicians from German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party say this should include those who deny Israel’s right to exist. Germany took in 1.1 million refugees in 2015 alone.

Country: Netherlands

Hundreds of people attended the unveiling of a monument commemorating 251 Jews deported from a psychiatric hospital in The Hague 75 years ago. The patients were sent to Westerbork transit camp, then on to Auschwitz. Of the 251 deported, 227 were killed, many from exhaustion, stress and thirst.

Country: Myanmar

American Jewish organisations have urged the U.S. Senate to get tough on Myanmar – formerly Burma – with increasing evidence that its army committed ethnic cleansing of the Muslim Rohingya minority in Rakhine State. A total of 24 groups, including many of the biggest, urged ‘targeted sanctions’.
