Tonbridge Angels made their way through to the next round of the FA Cup with a second 3-0 win over Wingate & Finchley of the fledgling season.
This match did ebb and flow, and was more even than August’s league encounter, but clinical finishing separated the sides on this occasion.
Craig Dundas opened the scoring for the visitors as he bundled home from corner in the 16th minute – the initial header from closer range having been parried by keeper Shane Gore.
The first half was bereft of chances as both sides were solid and functional, and compact defences kept the keepers untested.
Ten minutes after the break the lead was doubled, again through Dundas. The makeshift defence – without injured Tommy Smith and suspended Sean Cronin – gave the ball away and the striker broke clear. His first effort was saved by Gore but the rebound fell kindly for the Tonbridge man who rolled the ball in.
Wingate’s Tommy Tejan-Sie rifled an effort against the crossbar from 25 yards, and a better chance soon followed. Luke Ifil crossed deep from the right where Tanasheh Abrahams was unmarked but his free header somehow went wide of the left post.
Wingate had their tails up, and an Abrahams cross narrowly evaded the unchallenged run of Ahmet Rifat.
However, Tonbridge were in control and Elder settled the game with ten minutes remaining finishing from the left side, as the home side’s momentum counted for nothing.
The Blues return to league action with a trip to Harrow Borough on Tuesday night, the stage of last week’s penalty shootout win.
