Labour peer Lord Glasman has paid tribute to volunteers from Shomrim who foiled two men who attempted to steal his bag.

The academic was targeted by two youths on bikes near his home in Stoke Newington.

The pair’s attempted mugging was witnessed by local members of Shomrim, who then pursued and apprehended the suspects until police arrived and arrested them.

Praising the community volunteers, Glasman, the founder of thinktank Blue Labour, said: “Someone tried to steal my bag from my hand on their bike.
