A Hindu woman from Leicester and a Jewish woman from Texas have tied the knot in the UK in what is believed to be the country’s first interfaith lesbian wedding.

Kalavati Mistry and Miriam Jefferson fell in love 20 years ago, while on a training course, but it was only recently that Kalavati was able to come out about her sexuality to her parents.

In February the pair had a Jewish wedding in San Antonio, Texas, and this week they married in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Leicester, wearing red and white bridal colours, fresh garlands and ‘mangala sutra’ necklaces, before flying back to the U.S. where they plan to live.

Speaking to Pukaar News, Kalavati said: “I will follow the Hindu faith and follow some of the Jewish traditions. I’d like to see our lives bond together – our traditions and our cultures. We get to embrace both, Hinduism as well as Judaism. That’s how I see it. I hope this brings people together.”
