Jerusalem mayor to name traffic island by new embassy in honour of Trump

Nir Barkat wants to dedicate a site near the new building to the president of the United States after the landmark embassy move

A traffic island located next to the new American embassy in Jerusalem will be named in honour of the United States and President Donald Trump.

The area will be called “United States Square – in honour of President Donald Trump,” Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat announced on Tuesday.

“President Trump has decided to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people, to stand on the side of the truth, and to do the right thing,” Barkat said in a statement. “Naming this square in honour of the president is our way of showing our love and respect for the president and the American people, who always stand by the side of Israel.”

He also posted the announcement on Facebook.

The embassy will be dedicated on May 14 in the presence of nearly 1,000 guests, including a delegation of about 250 American officials.

The square — which in photos appears to be a circle — will be formally dedicated after the embassy dedication, the Times of Israel reported.
