The latest Maccabi GB School Sports Tournament ended in success for Naima ‘A’, as they triumphed against 27 other teams to win the Years 5 & 6 boys football tournament.
The event, at Mill Hill PowerLeague, welcomed 14 schools, who brought 28 teams to play between them. In total, over 250 young people were engaged in the event.
The tournament saw teams split into five groups and play each other in a league format with the top team in each group qualifying, along with the three best runners-up, for the Knock-Out stages. Every match was exciting with a competitive edge, with the latter stages of the tournament producing some good displays from the footballers on show.
The semi-finals were a fight to the end, with both matches being exceedingly close – Clore Shalom ‘A’ saw off Rosh Pinah ‘A’ and Naima ‘A’ gained victory over HJPS ‘A’, pitting Naima ‘A’ against Clore Shalom ‘A’ in the final.
The final proved to be a very close game with both sides playing good attacking football as they tried to create a break-through. Clore Shalom had the better of the chances on the Naima goal but did not manage to convert any of them. Naima scored two great goals to finish the day off as champions. The afternoon concluded with the medals presentation and the trophy was awarded to the winning Naima team.
Maccabi GB’s School and Sports Coordinator, Alex Elf spoke about the numbers engaged and the quality of play at the boys competition. He said: “Today has been a total success with football being the overall winner. To engage over 250 young players in the event, and witness some truly fantastic football being played in the right spirit is exactly what Maccabi GB aims to achieve at these tournaments. It is also great to see many parents and teachers attending to support their children, creating such a supportive environment for the players.”
