England cricket team backs Moeen Ali over Gaza wristband
The England cricket team is prepared to let all-rounder Moeen Ali continue wearing wristbands declaring his support for the population of Gaza, during the remainder of the third Investec Test.
The extra clothing Moeen wore while batting against India at the Ageas Bowl featured the slogans ‘Save Gaza’ and ‘Free Palestine’.
It is yet to become clear whether the International Cricket Council will take a dim view of practising British Muslim Moeen’s show of solidarity, or indeed issue any sanction under their code of conduct.
An initial response from the world governing body was that the matter will be “investigated”.
The England and Wales Cricket Board was able to clarify, meanwhile, that it was unaware beforehand of Moeen’s plans to wear the wristbands but will not be asking him to take them off.
A spokesman added: “We don’t believe he has committed any offence.”
The 27-year-old made 12 runs in England’s 569 for seven declared on day two of the match.
