Esther Sachon, Britain’s oldest Jewish woman died on Sunday at the age of 109.

Born on March 18 1907, Esther grew up on Hessle Streetin the East End and met her husband Louis at Oxford & George’s Club before moving to Stamford Hill, then Hendon and finally Stanmore where she was a resident at Jewish Care’s Princess Alexandra Home.

A mother of three, Esther was widowed at the age of 51 and having started out as a dressmaker, she then worked in retail for 30 years.

A recipient of six birthday cards from the Queen, Esther outlived her two sons Peter and Michael, but is succeeded by her daughter Helena, five grandchildren and 13 great-children.
